FAQs
I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the challenges being faced.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
A mental health professional helps you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listens without judgment or expectations, and helps you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing your business.” While friends and family can be good supports, they often don’t have the boundaries it takes to allow you to make your own choices even if they don’t agree with them. Lastly, friends give advice while therapist help you arrive at your choices.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. There’s no magic pill that will take care of everything. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the challenges you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that support you accomplishing your personal goals.
What Services Do You Provide And To Whom?
The Best Me Counseling Services provides mental health treatment to adults dealing with Depression, Anxiety, Adjustment Disorders, and other mild/moderate diagnosis. All services are provided via telehealth using HIPPA compliant platforms. If you are in need of crisis support, please contact 911 or go to your local emergency department for support. Services are provided on an outpatient basis only, and all interactions require a pre-scheduled appointment to ensure quality services are provided.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
We often start with a free 10 minute consultation or inquiry form. I want you to find a therapist that best fits your needs, and at times that may require a referral to a different provider. Next you attend an intake/assessment, this is where your therapist will get to know more about you. Once we’ve both decided to work together we will create a treatment plan, that outlines your goals, timeframe, and frequency of visits. Sounds like a lot, however, it’s really simple, any good therapist will walk you through it and make the process simple.
How long will it take?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. However, I will say that I don’t believe lifelong treatment is needed for most. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time treatment takes depends on your desired personal development, your commitment, and the factors that brought you in to counseling. Therapists should not be permanent fixtures in your life, once life feels more manageable for you on your own, it’s time to move forward. No worries, if things become unmanageable again or a new challenge arises, you just seek services again.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
Great question! Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success. So that means,
- you actually are applying what’s being learned
- committing to being honest,
- make an effort to try new approaches,
- be open to hearing new perspectives
- Be consistent, sporadic attendance breeds poor results
